When to Refer to a Nephrologist
A referral should be made to a nephrologist if any of the following conditions exist.
- Elevated Serum Creatinine – Even a mildly elevated serum creatinine is a very strong indicator of chronic kidney disease. To calculate the level of kidney disease, use our GFR calculator by clicking here or on the GFR Calculator menu choice to the left.
- Polycystic Kidney Disease
- Microalbuminuria / Proteinuria – protein in urine
- Diabetic Nephropathy
- Uncontrolled Hypertension
- Hypernatremia or Hyponatremia – high / low sodium
- Recurrent Kidney Stones
- Lupus Nephritis
- Acute Renal Failure – contact nephrologist’s office immediately.
